Land Restoration & Food Security

Paddy Land Restoration and Bamboo Distribution

Across six communities in the Ududumbara region, CDC distributed bamboo plants and materials to help farming families reclaim abandoned paddy lands — bringing degraded land back into productive use and strengthening the long-term food security of rural households.

Ududumbara Villages

Restoring abandoned paddy lands through bamboo and community action

In the villages of Munamalapelessa, Geradigala, Udawala, Udawewa, Dumbara Gama, and Gedara Kumburu Yaya, many paddy fields had fallen out of cultivation over time — leaving fertile land idle and reducing the capacity of communities to grow their own food. To address this, CDC organised the distribution of bamboo plants and restoration materials to farming families in these communities. Bamboo plays a dual role in land restoration: it stabilises soil along paddy bunds and water channels while also providing a long-term, sustainable resource for the household. By combining bamboo distribution with practical guidance, this project helped families take the first steps toward bringing their land back into productive use.

Focus Area

Paddy land restoration and sustainable agriculture

Location

Munamalapelessa, Geradigala, Udawala, Udawewa, Dumbara Gama, Gedara Kumburu Yaya

Community Purpose

To restore abandoned paddy lands by distributing bamboo plants and materials across six Ududumbara communities, supporting long-term food security and sustainable land use.

Why It Matters

Bringing Land Back to Life

Abandoned paddy land represents lost potential — for food production, for ecological function, and for community resilience. Bamboo is uniquely suited to support restoration: its root systems stabilise slopes and bunds, reduce erosion, and improve soil health. Over time it becomes a versatile, harvestable resource for the household. This project helped farming families cross the threshold from unused land to productive land, with the guidance and materials to make that transition real.

  • Bamboo plants and materials distributed to farming families across six villages in the Ududumbara region
  • Abandoned paddy lands brought back into productive use, improving local food security
  • Soil stabilisation along bunds and water channels, reducing erosion and protecting paddy fields
  • Long-term household resource established through bamboo that can be harvested and used locally
